Roanoke Island Festival Park Events
Roanoke Island Festival Park is an interactive family attraction that celebrates the first English settlement in America. The centerpiece of the 25-acre island park adjacent to Manteo, North Carolina, is Elizabeth II, a representation of one of the seven English ships from the Roanoke Voyage of 1585. Costumed Elizabethan sailors greet visitors and help them experience sixteenth century seafaring life. Also visit the Settlement site, Roanoke Adventure Museum and see the Legend of Two-Path film. Events are scheduled throughout the year in our indoor Film Theatre and our Outdoor Pavilion. Admission is charged. The on-site Art Gallery, fossil pit, Museum Store, Outer Banks History Center and marsh-side boardwalks are free and open to all. Hours vary seasonally. North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island
The NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island will offer a variety of maritime skills, boatbuilding, sailing programs and workshops throughout the year in the Creef Boathouse. Tai Chi on the Duck Town Green
Tai Chi will be held on the Duck Town Green on Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. from April 1 through October 28. Tai Chi is a gentle art of health and well-being for people of all ages and health conditions and incorporates slow, graceful movements to increase strength and flexibility, and improves balance and circulation. Land of Beginnings Festival’s Living Legend Community Luncheon
The Land of Beginnings Festival invites all to attend the Living Legend Community Luncheon to be held at noon on Monday, April 7, at the Pavilion at the Wright Brother National Memorial. During the event, the Living Legend Award will be presented to this year’s recipient who brings his own sparkle – Eddie Greene of Manteo. N.C. Senate Pro Tem Marc Basnight will deliver the keynote speech focusing on “Going Green.” Art Keeney, president of East Carolina Bank will present the first Living Legend Scholarship from the Living Legend Endowment Fund established by the banking corporation last year and managed by the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Hosting this year’s event will be Jon Cash of WAVY television. The event is one of many to be held from April 4 through April 12 as part of the Land of Beginnings Festival, An Outer Banks Original. The nine-day long festival will celebrate the rich history and cultural heritage of the Outer Banks and explore ways to both preserve and promote it. Cost of the luncheon is $15 and advance reservations are required. Call 252-473-2127. The Land of Beginnings Festival is an annual celebration of Outer Banks Originals which defines who we are as a community. Events planned at various sites that week include a long list of exciting cultural, educational and entertainment activities. Art Gallery. Dare County High School youth show their best work during the month of April. The annual exhibition is always eclectic featuring two- and three-dimensional art. Harmony Café
Harmony Café an evening of music, coffee, flavored teas and desserts will begin a monthly Music and Open Mike Night series April 11 at 7pm at His Dream Center, 205 Baltic St in Nags Head with featured artist Kim Kalman. Kalman is a noted local vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. Also appearing is Angelo Sonnesso a vocalist and keyboard artist. Angelo is also a board member of the Nags Head Lions Club. Coffee, supplied by Southern Bean owner Eric Gardner, and delicious homemade treats (supplied by Lions Club and GEM members) will be available for a $5 donation. Seniors over 60 year olds are asked to donate $4. Games such as checkers and dominos will be available. Thanks to generous business owners and club members we have some wonderful raffle items. This coffee house will be the first of our monthly series, held on the 2nd Friday of the month. Proceeds from Harmony Café will support the Nags Head Lions Club in their projects providing services for children and adults with visual problems and GEM’s programs supporting Dare County citizens with dementia and their care givers. North Carolina Maritime Museum - Build Your Own Kayak
9 a.m. - 4 p.m. North Carolina Maritime Museum, Manteo. Build a 14 foot kayak. This workshop will meet on three consecutive Saturdays. At the end of the workshop the participants will have a 14 foot wooden kayak. The class is limited to four teams. Each team can have up to five members. The cost is $650. Workshop limit is 5. The Cello / Piano Project with Eugene Friesen and Tim Ray
4:00 p.m. Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Sweeping melody and rocking rhythm. The program will include original works and music by Jobim, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and more. Friesen takes the cello beyond its traditional home of the classical ensemble, opening the door to a new era for the soulful instrument. His insight into classical jazz and world music reveals a new and rhythmic facet of an orchestra. The price of admission is included in the general admission ticket to the Park.
