Lost Colony Costume Shop Fire Update

Published September 30, 2007 by admin

By now, everyone has heard about the fire that recently swept through the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and consumed The Lost Colony’s Costume Shop destroying most of the production’s elaborate costumes, including vintage ones.

Thanks to an observant resident across the sound who saw the fire spreading at the north end of Roanoke Island late one night, what could have been a total loss was contained to the long-running outdoor drama’s Costume Shop and two maintenance buildings.

It was pretty bad, though, and some of the saved pieces returned safely from cleaning in Norfolk on Wednesday, Sept. 19th. The costumes were luckily well-documented so nimble-fingered designers and creators are already remaking garments and accessories.

The show must go on and the historic presentation reopens next season for it’s 71st run on May 30, 2008. The staff plans to be fully costumed by then and welcomes all the help they can get!

If you or anyone you know would like to donate to the Costume Shop Replacement Fund, visit www.thelostcolony.org or call (252) 473-2127.
