Carova Postal delivery to stop
Published October 7, 2007 by adminCiting increasingly unsafe driving conditions, the U.S. Postal Service has decided to halt mail delivery to the northernmost Currituck County 4-wheel drive access beaches in Carova.
For 20 years, the USPS has delivered mail to group mailboxes designated for residents of the farthest-reaching territory of the three sections which comprise the “4WD” area which also includes Swan Beach and North Swan Beach.
Twice last week the mail couldn’t be delivered due to high surf according to Enola Rice, a spokesperson for the USPS. Roads continue to deteriorate within the rugged community although the citizens and County Commissioners are actively trying to find solutions to keep the problems from worsening or correct the current problems, and make everyone happy in the process.
Also, tourist activity on the 4WD beaches has increased tremendously in the last 20 years, creating another layer to the hazardous situation for those needing to drive the beach on a daily basis.
Mail delivery to the existing boxes has not yet stopped, and no date has been set for the halt. The County is trying to find a suitable place farther south for replacement of the postal boxes for the hardy souls inhabiting Carova.
