Coastal Stormwater Rules hearings

Published October 3, 2007 by admin

On the evening of September 20th, COA’s Roanoke Island campus hosted a hearing by the NC Division of Water Quality (DWQ) to hear public comment regarding proposed changes to the state coastal storm water runoff rules.

Amendments being proposed would require all of North Carolina’s 20 coastal counties to comply with phase two storm water requirements now set forth in Brunswick, Onslow and New Hanover Counties.

Polluted shellfish waters and other environmental concerns are seriously at stake, but developers and land owners have real concerns, too, so both sides of the issue have plenty of voice.

About 50 Dare County residents attended the hearing and 25 of them spoke. The DWQ is still taking written submissions through October 15th. Give your opinion by writing to Tom Reeder, DWQ Wetlands and Storm water Branch, 1617 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1617.
