Contract for Kill Devil Hills curbside recycling has been approved
Published March 21, 2008 by Sabrina GordonResidents in Kill Devil Hills might soon be able to subscribe to a curbside recycling program as early as May. Last week the Board of Commissioners gave approval for staff to begin negotiating an agreement with Bay Disposal. Bay Disposal is a solid-waste collection, disposal and recycling company which is based in Hampton Roads.
The franchise agreement would ensure that only Bay Disposal would be permitted to provide the service to Kill Devil Hills residents. They would have the exclusive rights for three years.
Homeowners who participate would pay $8.95 a month for a 96-gallon cart. The company accepts a range of commingled recyclables and they would provide a once a week pickups.
Bay Disposal is the lowest of the three bidders who submitted proposals to the town and they do not require a minimum number of subscribers in order to provide services. Town officials considered a mandatory recycling program but abandoned the idea after realizing the cost.
The town of Duck has a curbside recycling program as an option. In Southern Shores curbside recycling is mandatory. In the towns of Kitty Hawk, Manteo, and Nags Head do not have curbside recycling.
