Dare County commercial fishermen’s monument
Published November 28, 2007 by adminDedication of the new Dare County Commercial Fishermen’s Monument will be held Saturday, December 3rd, 3:00 pm, at the Outer Banks Visitor’s Center on Roanoke Island.
First Flight High School senior Connor Winstead had the idea four years ago to commemorate Dare County’s longstanding heritage of those who work on the water to feed the rest of us.
The enterprising 17-year old’s idea has become a reality and commercial fishermen from all over Dare County along with the public are welcome to attend the unveiling ceremony, where light refreshments are planned.
Seeing the need to make the “public aware of the fisherman’s plight,” Connor felt that the rich fishing heritage of Dare County might be fading away and wanted to make a lasting monument while also raising the public’s awareness of what commercial fishermen endure and produce for the well being of the community.
