First Flight Middle School’s “All That Jazz”

Published January 4, 2008 by Terry Rush Cremia

First Flight Middle School has a new musical sensation! Eight talented FFMS students comprise All That Jazz, an ensemble formed in September 2007 that specializes in Dixieland and Traditional Jazz music.

They are preparing to compete in Sacramento, California in February 2008 in the Youth Traditional Jazz Festival, Middle School Division.

One of only four such competitions countrywide, the three-day event has each group judged by professional musicians, gives them individual training opportunities and the chance to hear professional Jazz musicians perform.

The ensemble members are Joshua Ross, Claire Thomas, Zoe Manolas, Billy Turonis, Trevor McPherson, Ali Jones, Dani Zapata and Mei Mei Cook.

Their first public performance will be on January 11th when they open for the Laura Martier Quartet at the jazz concert at First Flight High School Auditorium at 6:30 pm.

Raising money all on their own, All That Jazz is not funded in any way by the school or the PTA, and they must rely solely on corporate and individual donations. Local music organizations have offered to help in fundraising.

Tickets for the January 11th jazz concert are available at the door and in advance at a discounted price at these locations: Plum Crazy, Hooters, Front Porch Cafe, Outer Banks Transit, Jolly Roger, Luxury Boutique and Manteo Booksellers.
