“Imagination Library” to begin in Dare County
Published October 27, 2007 by adminCountry music legend Dolly Parton originally founded Imagination Library in her hometown so that preschool children could have a head start on reading and to encourage a love of learning and reading. The program is now spreading to communities across the country.
The Children and Youth Partnership for Dare County (CYP) plans to create an Imagination Library for children ages birth to 5 years. The decision was made at the annual CYP board meeting on September 24th.
A careful selection of age-appropriate hardcover books is to be home-delivered one a month, every month to children in the program until their 5th birthday. In hopes of fostering a love of reading at as early an age as possible, promoting better literacy into the school years and to best prepare kids for kindergarten, the program chooses books that promote self confidence and self esteem.
All children within the set age group are eligible. The library builds in each home so that each child begins kindergarten with a habit of reading with his or her family and individually.
The Outer Banks Community Foundation presented the CYP with a $12,000 check which will ensure 20% of Dare County’s kids below age 5 will be able to participate for one year.
The cost for each child will be $27 per year. Information will be available for families beginning in December with enrollment slated to begin in January, 2008.
This is a crucial cause and one that all citizens of Dare County should support. Programs like this help ensure our children will grow up with the very best educational basics.
CYP is accepting donations and would like to reach their goal of 35% of Dare County children below age 5 being covered for the first year. If you’d like to donate, visit the Children and Youth Partnership for Dare County at www.darekids.org or call (252) 441-0614.
