Know Your Park community education program
Published December 24, 2007 by adminThe National Park Service (NPS) Outer Banks Group has sponsored several presentations about archaeology and ancient culture in the NC coastal plains lately, with future programs scheduled throughout the season.
NPS Outer Banks Group Superintendent Mike Murray says “the rich and diverse cultural history” of the Outer Banks is the focus of the Know Your Park program series and hopes that “local students as well as adults will take advantage of this opportunity” to learn more about the area.
Anthropologist Dr. Randy Daniel spoke at the Fort Raleigh National Historical Site Visitor Center and also at the Fessenden Center in Buxton in late November. Dr. Daniel is with the East Carolina University Department of Anthropology and is an award-winner and author.
The Know Your Park program is geared toward educating the public about the natural world and cultural heritage in our surrounding parks, such as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial, and the Fort Raleigh National Historical Site, home of The Lost Colony and Elizabethan Gardens.
Upcoming Know Your Park programs include: a deep-water habitats presentation by Dr. Steve Ross from University of NC, Wilmington on January 29th in Ocracoke and January 30th in Buxton; North Carolina whales will be discussed by William McLellan, also with UNCW, in late February in Ocracoke and Buxton.
Murray states the presentations “offer local residents an opportunity to both learn about, and better enjoy, their National Parks.”
