Manteo Skate Park Almost Complete!
Published October 13, 2007 by adminDare County Parks and Recreation’s team effort with the Town of Manteo to build a skate park is almost realized. The project is expected to be completely finished and open by the end of October.
The guys behind the construction, Artisan Concrete, also built the skate park in Corolla and are doing “a good job” on the 180-foot street-course park, according to John Wilson, Mayor of Manteo. For several years the struggle for the streets and sidewalks has grown between Manteo’s ever-populous tourist traffic and local skaters in the downtown waterfront area.
The Town of Manteo offered $50,000 for the project, located behind the old Manteo Middle School which is now part of the College of the Albemarle. The Town of Manteo agreed to pay for the construction and Dare County will operated it.
Local skaters are stoked about the park because they’ll now have a place of their own without getting hassled downtown, and some have already taken a few test runs on it!
Manteo has tried for five years to make this a reality, and even asked for local skater input about where the park should be located. Liability insurance laws were part of the delay, but now North Carolina has relaxed a few rules, thus allowing counties and towns to operate skate parks without huge liability costs.
