NC burning ban temporarily lifted
Published January 16, 2008 by Terry Rush CremiaDespite the continuing drought, the statewide burning ban has been temporarily lifted.
North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) and the Division of Forest Resources (DFR) are monitoring the situation to determine if the ban will need to be reinstated, but for now officials believe that recent rains might have lessened the dry forest debris enough to lift the ban, put into effect on October 15, 2007.
Statewide rainfall totals during the last week ranged from approximately a quarter inch to up to three inches.
The entire state of North Carolina is still in the grip of an “exceptional drought” according to the NC Drought Management and Advisory Council.
The eastern NC counties such as Dare, Camden, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, Chowan, Hertford, Hyde, Perquimans, and Tyrrell are experiencing “severe” drought conditions.
In most locations, there are still limitations to what and how items may be burned and permits must be obtained.
Visit the Division of Forest Resources at www.dfr.state.nc.us to stay updated on the current drought conditions and the ban. Call your local fire department or fire marshal’s office to find out exactly what, where, when and how you may burn any items in your location.
