OBX locals support the local food banks

Published December 18, 2007 by admin

Good news in the current not-so-great Outer Banks economy: donations to the local food banks and pantries have not suffered too greatly.

They need our support all year long and plenty of folks in our community have always thought about those less fortunate than themselves, helping out on a constant basis.

Gerry Lesko, who chairs the Beach Food Pantry said this year requests for aid have risen, which they always do this time of year given that summer jobs dry up and we all have to “batten down the hatches.”

Thus far this winter, Lesko said the number of aid requests rose from the usual 45-60 families to about 93 families, about doubling the aid request load for the Beach Food Pantry.

Ann Davis from the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Manteo said their requests for aid increased as well, but not to a large degree. That organization aided 68 families in each of the last two months, as of early December.

Several local OBX businesses are steadfast in their devoted energy to donations–namely the Outer Banks Homebuilder’s association, the Girl Scouts and First Flight High School, who donated a combined 7,428 POUNDS of food to the Beach Food Pantry this year!

Hooray for those dedicated organizations and to everyone in our community who even gives one dollar to help shore up the food stores and monetary toiletries and essentials reserves for those in times of need.

Keep up the good work, Dare County!
