Off-Road Vehicle Accesses Reopen

Published September 29, 2007 by admin

Off-season beach driving beckons.

As of September 16th, National Park Service Outer Banks Group Superintendent Mike Murray has opened some of the Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) beach driving areas that were seasonally closed during the summer months in front of the Hatteras Island villages on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge at the north end of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island also have sections reopened to ORV use.

Some sections of the beaches will remain closed to driving that are either currently too narrow or inhabited by protected wildlife, such as turtle and bird nest sites.

Several smaller wildlife enclosures have room to drive around and the Park Service is doing all it can to accommodate beach drivers and find solutions to strike a fair balance between man and nature.

So please always be mindful of the NPS postings and never drive, walk or let your pet roam in these enclosed areas. Driving safely, respecting the beach and other people and following the rules keeps beach driving open for us all!
