Published February 3, 2008 by Sabrina GordonThere will be a free program at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island on Thursday,Feb.7th at 1p.m. The program will be presented by the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station. There will be an overview of the United States Lifesaving Service with photos, documents and great artifacts from the Pea Island Lifesaving Station as well as from the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station.
Linda Molloy and James Charlet both managers of the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station Historic Site will tell the story of the heroic all-black Pea Island crew and their rescue of the E.S. Newman. The Pea Island station and the Chicamacomico Lifesaving station were sister stations and they both interacted on a daily basis.
The North Carolina Aquarium has some wonderful paintings on display of the all-black crew that show their actions while they manned the Pea Island Lifesaving Station. Although there is little known about The United States Lifesaving Service it played a huge role in American history. If you would like more information about this free program call 252-473-3494.
