Southern Shores to get much-needed canal dredging
Published October 17, 2007 by adminThe Town of Southern Shores will begin accepting bids for the long-overdue canal dredging, by recent unanimous Town Council vote.
The work will require significant engineering and the Town has asked that bids include detailed engineering specifics. One issue the project will face is the number of bridges scattered throughout the canal areas of Southern Shores, one being the Dick White Bridge.
The Town’s current CAMA permit application stated that hydraulic dredge equipment will be used, but experts feel that some mechanical equipment will be needed to keep the project within budget and to be able to work around some of the foreseen obstacles such as bridges.
Dredging is only permitted between the months of November through February, so the Town will try to move quickly to get bids in and awarded by December. Part of the “long and tedious” process will involve obtaining the proper CAMA permits in time, according to Quible engineer Joe Anlauf.
Prior to the October 2nd Town Council meeting, Southern Shores Mayor Don Smith said that a project manager had not yet been named. The citizens of Southern Shores have desperately wanted the canals dredged but a large stumbling block was the opposition to condemnation of Town land for depositing the spoil accumulated during dredging.
Mayor Smith stated recently that condemnation of common areas owned within the Town by the Chicahauk Property Owners Association would not be pursued for spoil placement.
