State finally gets Jennette’s Pier

One of Nags Head’s long time treasures is now in the good hands of the North Carolina Aquariums.

Purchased by the non-profit NC Aquarium Society five years ago, just six months before Hurricane Isabel tore off 500 feet of the pier, the site will become the Aquariums’ first ocean pier and will work in conjunction with the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island.

The proposed two-story pier house will serve as an educational center and community events space and will house a food concession, arcade and tackle shop.

Approximately three-fourths of the $12 million project will be paid for by the aquariums’ state-wide admission receipts and the remainder will be funded by future fee revenue.

The other state aquariums are located in Pine Knoll Shores, NC and Fort Fisher, NC.

This winter the Society plans to begin demolition of the 5.12 acre site to make way for building the 1,000 foot proposed concrete pier slated to have wooded deck and railings. The existing on site buildings will be offered intact to the Town of Nags Head and Dare County governments if other uses exist.

If the project is a success, the Aquariums plan to add two more ocean piers in the future.
