Time to renew fishing licenses

Published February 16, 2008 by Sabrina Gordon

With the coming of the new year means to some fisherman to check the expiration dates on their Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses. The annual recreational licenses expire one year from the date of purchase,so those people that bought one in January of last year may have to renew it before going fishing. Commercial licenses and permits all expire on June 30th of each year. The yearlong grace period of handing out warning tickets to first offenders is over. Marine Patrol gave out more than 2,800 warning tickets in 2007. Now if you get caught without a license you can get a ticket with fines and court costs of up to $155.

License requirement is for anyone age 16 or older fishing in North Carolina. Unless you have a Lifetime Sportsman or Lifetime Comprehensive Fishing license issued prior to Jan.1,2006. The cost of an annual license is $15 for residents and $30 for non-residents. For information on all the types of licenses available go to www.ncdmf.net. Fishing licenses can be purchased at most bait and tackle shops and all DMF license offices..
