Total fireworks ban is adopted in the town of Nags Head

Published March 5, 2008 by Sabrina Gordon

The board of commissioners voted in January 3-2 that all fireworks are now illegal in Nags Head. Many residents have been expressing their concern over the private fireworks that are no longer just done on 4th of July, but on a nightly occurrence during the summer. Nag’s Head had a prior ordinance that allowed a few types of small fireworks, but had difficulty in enforcing the ordinance.

Now the ban states that “It shall be unlawful for any person to use, ignite, or explode any firecracker, torpedo, sky rocket, sparkler, or other substance or device that contains any explosive or flammable compound or substance, and is intended or commonly known as fireworks, and which explodes, rises into the air or travels laterally, fires projectiles, or discharges sparks into the air.” The town wide fireworks ban is effective immediately.

The town of Duck and Hatteras Island have similar ordinances and they have worked well in reducing the amount of fireworks being used. In the summer of 2002 more brush fires occurred than in the past seven to eight years in the town of Nags Head.
