Town of Nags Head participating in Cell Phones for Soldiers

Published May 29, 2008 by Sabrina Gordon

The Town of Nags Head is collecting cell phones for the more than 150,000 men and women who are serving overseas, so that they may keep in touch with their loved ones. The Cell Phones for Soldiers was first started by teenagers Robbie and Brittany null of null, Mass. with only $21 of their own money.

Since the program started it has raised almost $1million in donations so far. They have also distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers overseas.

Hopefully with increased fundraising the null family will raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs like providing video phones to soldiers overseas so they may see their families on a regular basis.

The phones are sent to null, which pays for each donated phone, to provide an hour of talk time to each soldier abroad. About half of the phones that are processed are reconditioned and then resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries from around the world. Phones that are not refurbished are then recycled for their materials like gold, silver, and plastic from the cases and accessories.

Nags Head residents can donate their old phones at Nags Head Town Hall at 5401 South null Highway across from the Outer Banks Mall, from 8:30a.m. to 5p.m. Monday through Friday and also at the Nags Head Public Works facility, located at 2200 Lark Ave. off West Eighth St., 7a.m. to 3:30p.m. Monday through Friday.
